10º Aniversario de la Bitácora del Dr. Ucha.

20140522045951-bitacoraucha.jpg

Hemos llegado a 10 años y seguiremos.

This study investigated the relationship between mental toughness and coping in an ultra-endurance (100km walk/run) event. A two-stage procedure was adopted: First, ‘in situ’ data was collected during the early, middle and later stages of the Trailwalker UK event, with 12 participants asked to report how they were coping, and the personal attributes that were enabling them to persist. The second stage consisted of a follow-up focus group, which was attended by three men and four women who successfully completed the event. Participants were questioned on the demands of the event and how they coped with these demands. Participants were also asked to describe the attributes of the ideal mentally tough Trailwalker. Data was transcribed, and themes were identified using an inductive content analysis and agreed with the participants. Results suggest that successful participants were stubborn / bloody-minded (tenacious), totally committed to their goals, objective, had a sense of humour, thrived on challenges, were able to maintain perspective in adversity and possessed humility. The attributes identified as key components of mental toughness in the present study appear relatively consistent with previous mental toughness research using elite athletes. Participants generally possessed a large variety of coping strategies that were used interchangeably during the event. Further research is encouraged to compare differences between elite and non-elite athletes in relation to mental toughness.

Psychological Predictors of Injury Occurrence: A Prospective Investigation of Professional Swedish Soccer Players

Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, 2013, 22, 19-26

© 2013 Human Kinetics, Inc. www.JSR-Journal.com

ORIGINAL RESEARCH REPORT

Ivarsson and Johnson are with the Center of Research on Welfare, Health and Sport, Halmstad University, Halmstad, Sweden. Podlog is with the Dept of Exercise and Sport Sciences, University of Utah, UT.

Context: Athletes participating in sport are exposed to a high injury risk. Previous research has found a great number of risk factors (both physiological and psychological) that could increase injury risk.1 One limitation in previous studies is that few have considered the complex interaction between psychological factors in their research design. Objective: To study whether personality, stress, and coping predicted injury occurrence in an elite soccer population based on a hypothesized model. Design: Prospective. Participants: 56 (n = 38 male, n = 18 female) Swedish Premiere League soccer players were selected based on convenience sampling. Intervention:

Participants completed 4 questionnaires including the Swedish Universities Scales of Personality,2 Life Events Survey for Collegiate Athletes,3 and Brief COPE4 during the initial questionnaire administration.

Subsequent to the first meeting, participants also completed the Hassle and Uplift Scale5 once per wk for a 13-wk period throughout the competitive season. Main Outcome Measures: A path analysis was conducted examining the influence of personality traits (ie, trait anxiety), state-level stressors (ie, negative-life-event stress and daily hassles), and coping on injury frequency. Results: Results of the path analysis indicated that trait anxiety, negative-life-event stress, and daily hassle were significant predictors of injury among professional soccer players, accounting for 24% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for athletes, coaches, and medical practitioners to attempt to reduce state-level stressors, especially daily hassles, in minimizing injury risk. Educating and training athletes and coaches in proactive stress-management techniques appears warranted.

Abstract – The study of factors influencing competitive anxiety, according to a multidimensional perspective and supported by valid instruments, is scarce among Brazilian athletes of different sports. The present study aims to: i) investigate the theoretical relationship between the different dimensions of the multidimensional theory of anxiety (i.e., cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence); and ii) investigate the effects of gender, type of sport (individual or collective) and competitive experience levels on cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence. A total of 303 athletes (233 males and 70 females), from different sports, aged between 18 and 40 years (M =24.22, SD = 5.07) completed a shortened version of CSAI-2 (i.e., CSAI-2R), about one hour before the start of competitions. Results revealed significant correlations between cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence dimensions, in accordance with the assumptions of the multidimensional theory. Additionally, comparative analyses indicated that female athletes and athletes from collective sports showed higher levels of cognitive anxiety, while male athletes and athletes with high competitive experience reported higher levels of self-confidence. These results were discussed taking into account the theoretical and practical implications of these findings for planning interventions of sport psychology in Brazil with athletes of different contexts.

Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 2013, 35, 132-143

It is well documented that competition can affect performance and emotion in sport. However, our understanding of the comparative effects of individual and team competitions on performance and emotion is limited.

We also know little about emotion-based mechanisms underlying the effects of different types of competition on performance. To address these issues, 64 participants completed a handgrip endurance task during timetrial, one-on-one, two-on-two, and four-on-four competitions while self-report and possible corroborative physiological measures of enjoyment, anxiety, and effort were assessed. Results indicated that performance, enjoyment, anxiety, and effort increased from individual to team competitions. The observed increases in performance were mediated by increased enjoyment and effort. Our findings illustrate differential effects of individual and team competitions on performance and emotion. Moreover, they indicate that both enjoyment based and anxiety-based mechanisms can explain changes in performance among different types of individualand team competition.

The Sport and Exercise Psychology is a field of application of the psychology recognized, so much in the academic area (formative offer, specialized journals, lines of investigation, …) as in the professional (labour with sportsmen, clubs and other sport organizations, creation of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology of the General of Psychologists’ Colleges of Spain, …). In both contexts, emphasizes the interest for the motivational processes, which has produced an enormous proliferation of works and investigations on these, using as paradigmatic example of the evolution of the set of this field of application of the psychology. This way so, it is the moment to do a critical examination of the situation, in which the quantitative increase has not been parallel with the qualitative one. We need to increase the rigor and the exigency to all the levels, clarifying confusions and avoid new mistakes, so much in what it concerns the experts’ formation - and those who must be these-, to the quality of specialized investigation, and intimately linked with it, the professional exercise. Finally, some suggestions sign to help to advance in these crossroads.

Relationship between achievement goals, anxiety and self-confidence, and subjective well-being in Brazilian athletes

M.G. Fernandes, J. Vasconcelos-Raposo, H.M. Fernandes

Motricidade 2012, vol. 8, n. 3, pp. 4-18

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between achievement goals, anxiety, selfconfidence and subjective well-being (positive and negative affect, and satisfaction with life) through path analysis. The sample consisted of 169 Brazilian athletes (140 males and 29 females), aged between 17 and 59 years, of different sports and competitive levels. The questionnaires TEOSQ, CSAI-2, EBES and SWLS were applied the day before the competition, on-site training of athletes. Main results partially demonstrated that anxiety and self-confidence mediated the relationship between motivational orientations and subjective well-being. Based on modification indices of the structural model, regression coefficients were specified between ego orientation and negative affect, and between task orientation and the positive dimensions of well-being (positive affect and satisfaction). Results were discussed taking into account the theoretical and practical implications of these relationships.

Analysis of precompetitive and competitive anxiety in youth judoka

Abstract

Aim: The present study aimed to verify levels of trait anxiety in juvenile judo athletes (between 14 and 18 yrs.) in pre‐competitive and competitive moments.

Method: Therefore, 40 athletes (20 boys and 20 girls) with 5 ± 2 yrs. of judo practice were analyzed. The instrument used was the "Sport Competition Anxiety Test” (SCAT). In statistical analysis, we observed differences with Friedman and Mann‐Whitney tests, p ≤ 0.05. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to identify the relationship between variables.

Results: Results demonstrated that males and females presented higher anxiety in championship, when compared with the training period. When compared gender in interaction with the moment, the competitive female group demonstrated higher anxiety than other groups. A significant and negatives correlations between anxiety, during championship and precompetitive moments, and judo practice time were found.

Conclusions: These data suggest preparatory work during the championship day should be different for male and female athletes, while female athletes have to be analyzed/considered in the preparation of the athlete.
